Summer 2021

Summer…

It’s hot and sultry and here in the Northwest, we are experiencing extraordinarily high temperatures for this time of year…. Over 100’s in most places….it makes you definitely want to sit in a cool place and relax. The hot weather can really tax our constitutions (our entire body systems) which is why the authorities always remind us to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids (once we feel “thirsty”…. Then we are already de-hydrated)… so don’t wait… drink a 16 ounce glass of water every couple of hours in this heat. “They” also suggest drinking 8 ounces of water for every 8 ounce cup of coffee or tea your consume, as they are ‘diuretics’ and can cause you to loose fluid more rapidly.

Our exercise in the summer time can be modified to fit your schedule…. Walking early in the morning (is better than late at night) because the coolest temps are first thing as the sun comes up…. Stays pretty hot late into the night. Perhaps doing hard cardio in an air-conditioned environment, like the YMCA or a gym someplace. For Yoga and Pilates…. I like to slow down the intensity a bit and focus on fluid form and the breath a little more.

It’s wonderful to get out and hike in the mountains, to cool off in a stream or backyard pool, to work in your garden and even go on more extreme outings in the wilderness…. We just need to be prepared…. Use common sense, as well as sunglasses, sunscreen, and bring water! If you are going camping overnight, you need all of those things…. Plus food and bedding and other things to make your camping experience more comfortable. Check availability… everyone has the same idea…. Getting outside…. Most of the camp grounds and places to play (In Idaho, anyway) are already reserved through Labor Day Weekend.

Enjoy these summer days…. In the middle of winter, we are always longing for the warmth of the sunshine, so enjoy each and every moment…. We never know how many moments we still have. Breathe deep, smile, feel gratitude, socialize with friends now…..enjoy the long summer days. Namaste’
