Pilates is a form of exercise (developed by Joseph Pilates) which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient graceful movement. Exercises are done on either a mat <on the floor> “Pilates Mat Work” — or on exercise equipment developed by Joseph Pilates that uses pulleys and resistance from participant’s own body weight (known as ‘reformer’ machines). Debbie works with students at the Caldwell YMCA on the mat using our own body weight and sometimes equipment like stability balls, step benches, mini balls, light hand weights or resistance bands as we work to develop those core muscles we call the “Powerhouse”.
Mat Pilates transfers very well into any small group or class situation -- where all we need is a mat. A combination of yoga and Pilates mixed together is the best use of time on the mat, strengthing, stretching and moving the entire body while focusing on our core muscles.
